Lina Bo Bardi

This project took place in the hopes to understand and learn design techniques and the use of different mediums. I chose Lina Bo Bardi, I was inspired by her organic modernistic approach and her use of nature directly onto the building. This is her project called CASA CIRCULAR.I mimicked her drawing first with watercolor and graphite. I continued the process two more times, second was collage, graphite, and markers. Thirdly, I used charcoal and color pencil.

Shoes

These are shoe I drew in different mediums, I knew it would be a challenging because I’m unfamiliar with how charcoal works. Creatively recreating them while still maintaining the realistic depth and shapes was also a limit. This project was enjoyable because of how much personality shoes hold on their own but the use of graphite or watercolor can enhance the story. The yellow converse tell me that these shoes are for someone chill and fun, The Graphite loafers tell me that this person means business and is more serious. Which is the contrast I wanted to be present.

Boxes & Paper Bags

Paper bags and boxes at first seemed like such a simple object and stood only one purpose. I found the purpose of this project was to gain understanding of how shading and highlighting makes the presence of an object much more alive. Charcoal felt the most appropriate medium because it adds heavy contrast quickly. Drawing the paper bags urged me to work more efficiently and tested my observation skills.

Upside Down Objects

Drawing this gave me a different understanding of an object. I started with chairs, something that had complicated shapes, I started with basic forms, and refined them. I wanted to approach different materials such as, a black leather bag that reflected light. And completing the assignment is a water bottle draw in charcoal, with slight reflective surface as well as a round shape.

Foreground, Middle Ground, Background

Focusing on three aspects of an image intrigued me, and helped me define the control I have of shining importance on story telling through design and orientation of the scene. I started with the Foreground and took two same sized papers and outlined the first one roughly onto the two other papers. This tested my use of watercolor, I wanted interior to feel completely separate with the use of bright colors and in-depth details. I wanted to show the softness and feeling I got from exterior, natural elements like the trees.

One & Two Point Perspectives

To create a space I had to think about the point of perspective. I thought of placement on the page, and how I could accomplish an atmospheric energy. First I drew everything with Just line work and I felt the drawing lacked depth and motion when it was simple lines. The markers enhance the energy and motion of the drawing, It adds time and age to the perspective.

Story Telling of Plants and Human Landscape

My sequential narrative I wanted to convey was the use of realtime places and how humans and our tools on a series of levels interact with plants. I highlighted the elements of plants in watercolor so it can stand out from the human elements such as roads, and furniture which is in graphite. I used watercolor for its softness and emotion I’m able to show through this.

To start I’ve summarized the story of this project and it started with My home where I tend to tropical plants on my own time. My caring for these non-native plants in my home is a controlled interaction between me and plants in a enclosed space. Next, is a representation of a similar concept of tending to plants but in an external setting on a patio where elements of nature can have a more direct connection. A cafe that is home to some plants inside but also a planted vine growing on the outside of the building is climbing the structure. After we can go to a city park, surrounded by skyscrapers, cars, and people but also a space for plants to be in a less controlled environment. Interactions of birds and people are prevalent here. Next we go to a suburban park where there is interactive tools for people but I felt the space for plants to interact without people was more noticeable here compared to the city park. Lastly is a stream and above the stream is a path, There are some elements of human interaction but this land was created like this in mind that the habitat will be able to function without people. Overall I wanted my story to show my thoughts on the use of natural elements and to put into thought that the importance that we use nature to support architecture.

Stitched Kitchen Perspective

This concept felt new to me, I struggled to understand why I was doing this or that I could just create these on a bigger piece of paper. I felt like I proved myself wrong here, I think the scattered papers, how they’re angled enhance the perspective of these drawings and also help with a sense of scale or space. At this point my choice of Charcoal was to test my ability to use it and apply it. I find warmth in charcoal and that is the feeling I wanted to be felt. I went in straight with charcoal no outlines, just focused directly on the details.

Multi Media Light Study

My approach to using multiple medias, as to thinking about concept as well as emotion. I knew with collage work I would be able to accomplish Textural details that also tell a story. I first approached this thinking about artist techniques and an architects work. I meshed together the inspiring art of Aaron Douglas, and the architect I learned about at the start of Fall 2024 term Lina Bo Bardi. Her use of plants, shapes, and texture drew me to use actual leafs and bark from trees in both works. The idea of using string was something I always wanted to try, it creates a fun texture while resembling the bushiness of plants. I used leafs as the glow of light in the first art piece, but my use in the purple painting was because there were actual plants draping down from the opening in the ceiling. I learned you can still create dimension even if you use opposing media, it also helps steer the emotion of art.

Reflection and Transparency

Honing in on the use of graphite, I saw a challenge when creating reflectiveness with this media. I felt inspired to attempt just graphite because the easy way would’ve been to use watercolor where creating shadows and color depth is more interpretive in the moment. Graphite doesn’t add color, so differentiating different materials like glass or water is more difficult. The intensity of shading and having darker darks would help bring this more to life.

Architectural Section

Coming into sectioning I now know the importance of understanding the ability to look into a space. Communicating what is inside and what is out is important, this made me think about how making a space either feel connecting or disconnected to the exterior. My approach was to show different images with different shading intensity as well as perception angles. Peering in and seeing how a space flows and marking the differences with heavy dark lines for walls that have been cut open.

Orthographic Drawing

Using a intricate shaped object, a hay ram doll, that was also textured with a uniquely faceted body. I drew the front view first, I had elevated the object so it was directly eye-level during the whole project. I chose to freehand this drawing because I saw it as the nature of the project. My understanding of many different sides as well as internal helps create that 3D space in your mind. What was most challenging was the top angle, most things aren’t really looked at from above or made to look from above.

3D Spatial Relief

My thought process started with a 2d sketch of the dome, then angling two papers against the background to get a street view aesthetic. I really wanted it to be popping out, the final product has made it to where you have to look in. I was inspired by pop-up books and shadow boxes. The first dome felt flat and this is where the transition started, I began modeling the dome and setting up buildings. The idea ideas to create an open-sided box was to challenge myself using the design software “Rhino”, That is where I measure and created a template and cut out each piece of foam board. The model I made is the next step towards my architecture/ design journey. I feel this challenged my assumptions about design work and gave me an understanding and dedication that projects involve.
